PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF HARRY LANE, SAVANNAH, GA AND OTHER OWNERS

September 23 – October 10, 2013

Harry Lane was born in Savannah in 1941. He grew up on Combahee Plantation, went to Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts and graduated from Yale University. He was a world traveler and a master craftsman in a number of disciplines. He was an avid book collector and purchased many of the lots offered here in England.

One of the highlights from his collection is R. Bowdler Sharpe’s Monograph of the Paradiseidae, or Birds of Paradise, and Ptilonorhynchidae, or Bower-Birds, 1891-1898, a two volume, folio size set with superb prints by and after J. Gould, J.G. Keulemnans and W. Hart.

Book categories include children’s classics, Asian history, architectural and decorative arts reference books, British classics with fine leather bindings, elephant folios with architectural and decorative prints and a large collection of Arthur Rakham illustrated books.

Other highlights from the auction include a Victorian burl-walnut gilt-metal mounted pedestal desk stamped by James Winter & Son, circa 1840 and a wonderful painting by Thomas Smythe (British, 1825-1906) of Horse Traders.
